Schiferer (ID 48/95) stellt Hoffman den biographischen Hintergrund in den Kontext der politischen und kulturellen Entwicklung Wiens zu Beginn dieses Jahrhunderts. Die individualpsychologische Theorie wird mit ihren Ausprägungen insbesondere auf dem pädagogischen Feld dargestellt, die Auseinandersetzung mit Freud ist anhand von Protokollen und biographischen Zeugnissen nachvollziehbar, die kurzlebige Rezeption in den USA, die sich wohl eher auf Adlers charismatische Persönlichkeit als auf seine Lehre und Therapie bezog (Selbsthilfe, Eltern- und Lehrerschulung), wird in ihrem enttäuschenden Verlauf deutlich.
