The Third World debt crisis and the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's adjustment policies have compelled many countries to move towards a contraction of public-sector expenditure and market-orientated development policies. Women in general, and the poorest amongst them in particular, have borne a disproportionate burden of the ensuing hardships. This book addresses the shortcomings in the current gender-blind analytical frameworks of government and international financial organisations. The authors in this volume delineate the negative implications that these have on the lives of women as producers and consumers of wealth, health education and welfare. They advocate the adoption of a gendered theoretical perspective capable of recognising and rewarding the multifaceted contributions of women to the economy. The case studies from Africa, Latin America and the Middle East highlight different state policies and ideologies and their impact on women. The book concludes with practical proposals for politicising gender and achieving structural transformation.
