A report on a group of prominent scholars at the Al Azhar university, led by Sheikh Mohammed Metwalli Shaarawi, which has sided with the government in president Mubarak's fluctuating conflict with Islamic extremists, in particular, in the congested and poverty-stricken Cairo suburb of Ein Shams but also in the southern township of Assiut. As is pointed out, the Al Azhar teachers, being fundamentalists and Moslem brothers themselves, had been hoping to start a process of healing the rift with militants, but the gulf between them instead has grown wider.
