Die erste Idee zu diesem Handbuch entstand, als ich vor sechs Jahren meine lichttechnische Lehrtatigkeit begann und den Mangel eines Lehr- und Handbuches auf Schritt und Tritt zu spüren bekam. Vorzugliche Sonderwerke existierten uber Photometrie, zum Teil allerdings etwas veraltet (LIEBENTHAL), zum Teil in englischer Sprache (WALSH). Das einzige, die gesamte Lichttechnik umfassende, seinerzeit von BLOCH herausgegebene Sammelwerk ist heute in entscheidenden Punkten veraltet. Grundlagen zu moderner synoptischer Darstellung der Lichttechnik geben die einschlagigen Artikel der groBen Handbucher der Physik (GEIGER-SCHEEL, WIEN-HARMS, GEHLHOFF); sie sind indes meist betont vom Standpunkt des Physikers geschrieben. Besonders unangenehm empfand ich den Mangel eines Sammelwerkes der Beleuchtungstechnik. Das umfangreiche Buch von JOLLEY, WALDRAM und WILSON bringt zwar anerkennenswert viel Material, läBt aber bezüglich der Systematik, der Trennung zwischen Wichtigem und Nebensachlichem manches zu wünschen übrig. Wer nicht die vielen beleuchtungstechnischen Erfahrungen, Methoden und Ergebnisse, welche namentlich die letzten beiden Jahrzehnte wissenschaftlicher Durchdringung der lichttechnischen Arbeit uns beschert haben, immer wieder aus den in zahlreichen Fachzeitschriften des In- und Auslandes zerstreuten Veroffentlichungen herausziehen wollte -Zeitschriften, die zum Teil schwer erhältlich sind -, konnte seiner Arbeit so manches wertvolle Resultat nicht zunutze machen. Es fehlte das Handbuch der Lichttechnik. Dieses Handbuch haben wir zu schaffen versucht.
