I disturbi dell'equilibrio sono molto comuni nella popolazione: particolarmente frequenti sopra i 40 anni, sono la prima motivazione di una visita medica dopo i 65 anni e tendono frequentemente a cronicizzarsi. I disturbi dell'equilibrio sono i sintomi di una disfunzione del sistema vestibolare, complesso sistema senso-psico-motorio, il cui compito è quello di controllare l'attività dei muscoli antigravitari per mantenere la stazione eretta, di quelli oculomotori per consentire la stabilizzazione del campo visivo durante il movimento, e le funzioni neurovegetative che hanno rapporto con la stazione eretta e il movimento. Se il sistema vestibolare fornisce le informazioni necessarie al controllo della stazione eretta, il rachide la realizza mediante una "stabilità dinamica", consentita dalle sue caratteristiche strutturali. Attraverso la propriocezione il rachide è anche un fondamentale sensore per il controllo dell'equilibrio; pertanto le tecniche proprie della medicina fisica e riabilitativa e della medicina manuale rappresentano un potente strumento di cura dei disturbi di equilibrio. Questo volume nasce dal confronto tra un fisiatra e un audiologo, che per 15 anni hanno integrato la loro esperienza clinica e propone pertanto un nuovo approccio interspecialistico ai problemi diagnostici e terapeutici dei pazienti con disturbi di equilibrio.
