Gert Lang geht in dieser Arbeit der Frage nach, wie gesellschaftliche Legitimations- und Akzeptanzprozesse von sozialer Ungleichheit zu erklären sind. Auf Basis neuerer struktur- und handlungstheoretischer Überlegungen stellt der Autor ein Akzeptanzkonzept auf und überprüft es mittels moderner statistischer Analysemethoden. Die Ergebnisse der Sekundäranalyse mit Befragten aus 14 europäischen Ländern weisen darauf hin, dass der soziale Zusammenhalt auf der relativen Akzeptanz von sozialer Ungleichheit beruht und gesellschaftlich legitimiert ist. Damit wird der aktuellen Frage nach den sozialen Spannungen und (Verteilungs-)Konflikten sowie überhaupt nach der gesellschaftlichen Kohärenz nachgegangen und diese neu beurteilt.
