Die Vorstellung, man könne die Infektionskrankheiten bald ausrotten, hat sich als trügerisch erwiesen. Nicht nur in vielen Entwicklungs- sondern auch in Industrieländern sind sie wieder auf dem Vormarsch. Der Artikel von Prost, Mitarbeiter der Weltgesundheitsorganisation, beschreibt mit Zahlenmaterial die jüngsten Tendenzen; er unterscheidet vorrangig zwischen Industrieländern auf der einen Seite, wo Kreislaufkrankheiten und Krebs die Haupttodesursachen sind, und Entwicklungsländern auf der anderen Seite, wo fast die Hälfte der Menschen an Infektions- und parasitären Krankheiten sterben. Amat-Roze beschreibt die Situation in Afrika südlich der Sahara mit statistischem Material, wo sich die Situation im statistischen Vergleich weniger verbessert hat als in anderen Entwicklungsregionen. Dies sei darauf zurückzuführen, dass hier zahlreiche Risikofaktoren zusammenkommen, die die Menschen verwundbarer machten: häufige Dürren, die besonderen Ökosysteme der Tropen und die Krise der nationalen Gesundheitssysteme.
