The story behind the making of the 5 "Planet of the Apes" movies and how the series became a pervasive part of American popular culture, made for American Movie Classics (AMC) cable television to celebrate 30 years since the first film. The first half deals with the development, filming and impact of the first film and how the original French novel was transformed into the first film; the second part looks at the other films and the TV series, the problems that the producers encountered during production of the entire series, often involving shrinking budgets and how the stories related to current events (e.g., the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement). Interviewees include actors Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, Linda Harrison, Natalie Trundy and Ricardo Montalban, directors Ted Post, Don Taylor and J. Lee Thompson, producers Mort Abrahams and Richard Zanuck, make-up artist John Chambers and others.
