Er holte zahlreiche Emigranten wie Fritz Lang oder Robert Siodmak aus dem amerikanischen Exil zurück, finanzierte mit "Die Spaziergängerin von Sans Souci" Romy Schneiders letzten Film, lieferte mit Winnetou-, Mabuse- und Edgar Wallace-Filmen die Blockbuster der 60er Jahre und setzte sich zeitlebens mit dem Holocaust auseinander.
