Content: This anthology presents music pedagogical research as a field of integrated reflection that transcends institutional and disciplinary barriers. The anthology aims to reinforce thinking, knowledge development and collaboration in the broad landscape of music pedagogical research and education. The authors are associated with performance music education, pre-service and in-service teacher education, specialist music teacher education, and early childhood teacher education.Through 14 chapters, the anthology examines admission tests and assessment guidelines in performing music education, music in interdisciplinary work in teacher education, notions of musicality in early childhood teacher education, entrepreneurship in higher music education, the principle instrument in general music teacher education, evaluation of concert production in music teacher education, multiculturalism across various music teacher educations, pipe organ education for children, dilemmas in Scandinavian choir-leader education, work experiences of female professors in music education, a performing musician's path to becoming a researcher, state funding and the mandate of performance music education, and the discursive terms of music/teacher education at four institutions of higher education. The topics and discussions addressed in these chapters are central across the higher educational programs that qualify students to teach in the various fields of music education.
Note: Higher education as context for music pedagogy research.

Content: Early music performance in its broadest capacity presents a compelling case of being something in the present that is representing, presenting, enacting, re-enacting, living and re-living, concretising and fantasizing a historical past. It is both what it is and something entirely other. Inspiring countless efforts to come to terms with its nature, one way of approaching the act of conveying or "doing" history is through pedagogy. Pedagogy, here, is multifaceted, as it is placed and displaced in learning, acting, mediating, communicating, perceiving, conveying and persuading historically remote, cultural practices. As such, this anthology includes both explicitly pedagogical chapters and more implicit approaches situated within pedagogical settings. The driving force behind the project is: When maintaining and sustaining a certain European cultural heritage, how do we do so as artists and pedagogues and to what effect? To cast a fresh gaze on traditional Early music performance studies, the authors of this volume argue for the pedagogical potential of such a project. Not only as something functioning as an artefact used within an educational setting, but as something primarily pedagogical also in its formation and re-formation. The way Early music is construed and portrayed just to fulfil the official boundary of its terminology is also a pedagogical act performed in multiple ways. It is not a question of regarding Early music scholarship and artistry as binary presentism versus historicism, but rather as historicism in presentism and presentism in historicism - which is precisely what this volume is all about and to which it seeks to contribute. The anthology's chapters highlight spectatorship, experience, theory, rhetoric, philosophy, representation, performance, performativity, literature, visual arts, pedagogy, education, pragmatism and also newmaterialism. They examine music that is readily categorised as Early music, as well as music that borders on, or is becoming, something else entirely, but with evident roots in the Early music repertoire

Content: What is going on in Kulturskolen – the Norwegian municipal school of music and performing arts? And what is the relation between the activities in the practice field and research? Kulturskolen is a type of school dependent on cooperation with others – kindergardens, primary and secondary schools, voluntary and professional cultural life, higher education and nonprofit organizations. The field of research related to Kulturskolen is similarly diverse; including both educational research, artistic research and organizational research. This anthology is the result of IRISforsk, a research group linked to the development project for kulturskole named IRIS. The IRIS-project was executed in collaboration between The Norwegian Council for Schools of Music and Performing Art and The Savings Bank Foundation DNB/Dextra Musica, and ran from 2014 to 2016. The anthology includes 13 chapters, eight of which are scientific papers evaluated by external peer-review. Contributors in the anthology are affiliated with five different educational institutions. The chapters discuss and visualize the scope of music and art school related research, including didactics, professional-oriented and management-focused issues, as well as organizational cooperation, talent development and culture as a tool for inclusion. The anthology targets anyone with an interest in research and development in the music and art school related field – researchers, staff and students in artistic education, teacher education and management education, as well as teachers, managers and other practitioners in the field

Content: This anthology presents research projects that examine the quality and tension in various forms of collaboration on teaching in and across different artistic disciplines, art forms and educational programs. The contributors are teachers, administrators, and researchers from Norway's 'culture school', primary school and preschool as well as higher educational programs that train teachers for these schools. Data for the studies has been obtained from these types of schools and from joint projects between them. The research spans a number of topics: culture school's external and internal collaboration patterns, diversity, well-being, tensions and conflicts in collaboration between culture school and primary school, what happens in practice when differing views about art collide, challenges that German music teachers encounter in teaching music at the primary school level, collaboration between students and children on musical theater productions, a statistical analysis of the elective primary school subject 'theater production', a look at how performative and transformative pedagogical practices with resistance, disruption, and transgression as key aspects can lead to understandings of difference and the bizarre. The book also includes an overview of the considerable research on collaboration between music schools and primary schools in Germany in connection with the project 'Jedem Kind ein Instrument' (An Instrument for Every Child). This anthology provides a substantial contribution to research on culture school in particular, inasmuch as culture school is a part of so many different realms of collaboration. The idea for this anthology was conceived in a music pedagogical research environment that, in keeping with the focus on collaboration, sought to encompass the full breadth of different artistic disciplines, art forms and educational programs

Content: This anthology presents research projects that examine the intersection between music, technology and education from a variety of perspectives. The contributors are from a range of educational programs within traditional pre-, primary and lower secondary school education, as well as music performance and technology educational programs. Data for the studies stems from primary and lower secondary school, as well as informal learning environments, in addition to the contributors’ respective education programs. The research projects examine a wide range of topics such as gamification of ukulele and song teaching, composition with iPads in the classroom, live looping as an approach to ensemble conducting, authentic music technology learning spaces, music-making in the “laptop-era”, sound, the notion of net-based presence, and challenges in higher electronic music education. As this anthology is the first publication in the MusPed:Research series, it also contains an introductory chapter about the series and the research network Musikkpedagogikk i utdanning (MiU). This anthology makes a distinct contribution to the research field of music technology in education and questions educational practices in the school and higher educational levels, the goals and content of music education, and our understanding of music and music creation in itself

Content: In a gradually more complex and insecure world, children, youth, teachers, and school leaders must learn to navigate unpredictability. To prevent inertia, knowledge, learning and education need to be reshaped to strengthen the ability to act responsibly and constructively. This edited volume reveals a need for pedagogical approaches that may assist both teachers and pupils into dealing with uncertainty, ambiguity, and indeterminacy. The book offers original and new knowledge with polyphony, possibilities, and tensions as overarching perspectives. Each chapter represents specific contexts and perspectives within different segments of the educational sector, on a continuum from early years learning to school management. Concrete examples are offered for teaching, learning, research, and management in a world marked by diversity, tension, and insecurity. Several chapters intersect and include findings that can be transferred to other contexts and practices. The aim is for the edited volume to serve as an initiating impetus for changes in practices, and to reveal how practices in dissimilar contexts may fruitfully stimulate one another. The authors represent different areas within teacher education and school management, and became acquainted while being enrolled in The Norwegian National Research School in Teacher Education (NAFOL) as doctoral students in cohort 8 (2016-2020). We hope the edited volume can inspire representatives across disciplines and sectors to learn from one another and contribute to a polyphonic discussion within educational research in Norway, through a continually questioning and reflexive approach towards one’s own practices and attitudes
