De Parménide à Platon et Aristote, de Descartes à Kant, de Husserl au second Heidegger, de Frege à Carnap en passant par Russell et Wittgenstein I, la science correspond à un système de connaissances unitaire qui a pour objet la recherche de la vérité, définie soit comme une propriété préexistante, soit comme un objet immanent aux protocoles logico-sémantiques. Mais, d'après le philosophe américain Richard Rorty, cette approche de la science est erronée, car elle ne comprendrait pas que la connaissance scientifique n'a pas un seul objet mais des objets divers. Contre cette conception, Rorty développe un constructivisme épistémique qui a pour but de substituer le désir de vérité au désir de solidarité. Il s'agit pour lui d'établir que la vérité qui émerge du débat scientifique n'a pas une force transcendante qui surplomberait la communauté des pairs culturels, mais constitue plutôt un ensemble de croyances contingentes qui génèrent l'espoir de vivre dans un monde culturellement pluriel, multidimensionnel. Il y a là une démarche qui rattache la vérité à l'éthique de la discussion pour instituer qu'elle se fabrique plutôt qu'elle ne se découvre. En proposant une herméneutique de la philosophie de Richard Rorty, appuyée sur les logiques contemporaines de la philosophie, cette thèse vise deux objectifs principaux : d'une part, examiner avec beaucoup de précision les motifs de la critique rortyenne de la tradition réaliste de la vérité depuis Parménide et Platon ; et, d'autre part, analyser les implications épistémologiques de la critique susdite aux plans théorique et pratique
