Das Paradies der "schönen Wilden": Für den europäischen Reisenden um 1900 war die Südsee verbunden mit der Sehnsucht nach fremder Schönheit und Faszination für die Ursprünglichkeit ihrer Bewohner. Davon zeugen u. a. die Gemälde von Emil Nolde und Max Pechstein. Dem verklärenden Blick der Künstler wird in diesem Band die historische Wirklichkeit gegenübergestellt: kostbare, bislang meist unbekannte Kunst- und Kultobjekte einer nahezu erloschenen Kunsttradition, die über Händler, Missionare und Kolonialbeamte nach Europa kamen. Dazu beschreiben namhafte Vertreter von Völkerkunde, Kunstgeschichte und Biologie die Kolonialzeit ebenso aus der Perspektive der Einheimischen wie aus der der fremden Europäer
