Ein Seh- und Hörerlebnis der besonderen Art, ein Gesamtkunstwerk mit Sprengkraft. Der indonesische Regisseur Garin Nugroho, der für die Vielfalt seiner erzählerischen Stile und die mutige Bewältigung umstrittener Themen bekannt ist, hat mit "Opera Jawa" seinen vielleicht klarsichtigsten Film geschaffen. Er feiert darin traditionelle Formen von Gamelan-Musik, Tanz und Performances und verbindet diese mit zeitgenössischen Gesangs- und Tanzstilen sowie mit Drehorten, die moderne Installationskünstler transformiert haben. Dabei hat er eine neue Form des Musicals ins Leben gerufen, eine "Oper für das 21. Jahrhundert". Er adaptiert eine der berühmtesten Geschichten des "Ramayana", des grossen Klassikers der indischen und südostasiatischen Literatur. Es ist die Geschichte eines leidenschaftlichen Liebesdreiecks: Die schöne Siti und ihr Ehemann betreiben eine Töpferei, aber die Dinge laufen nicht so, wie sie sollten, und als ihr Mann Setio fort ist, versucht der mächtige und skrupellose Händler Ludiro sie zu verführen. Siti verfängt sich in den Stricken eines Konflikts. Mit bewundernswerten Leistungen seiner drei Hauptdarstellenden und dazu den Kompositionen des berühmtesten Gamelan-Maestros Rahayu Supanggah, hat Nugroho einen Film geschaffen, dem es auf erstaunliche Weise gelingt, freudig multikulturellen Selbstausdruck zu feiern und zugleich ein Requiem über den Schmerz zu sein.
