Anfang der 1980er-Jahre wurde John Naisbitt durch ein Buch über globale "Megatrends" berühmt. Dieses Thema hat er seither zusammen mit seiner Frau Doris variiert, seit längerer Zeit auch mit einem Fokus auf Asien ("Megatrends Asien", ID-B 7/96; "Chinas Megatrends", ID-G 48/09). Die hier diskutierte "Neue Seidenstraße" (oder "Belt-and-Road-Initiative") ist ein Großprojekt, das von der Volksrepublik China vor ein paar Jahren ins Leben gerufen worden ist und Investitionen von grob geschätzt einer Billion US-Dollar vorsieht. Es umfasst im Wesentlichen den Aufbau neuer Verkehrswege, die China mit anderen, vor allem asiatischen Ländern verbinden, die aber auch bis nach Deutschland reichen sollen. - Der zunehmende chinesische Einfluss wird in der Literatur durchaus ambivalent bewertet. Die Autoren betonen hier aber fast ausschließlich die positiven Effekte, so als sei das Buch von der Regierung der VR China geschrieben worden (kritischer und detaillierter: Frankopan: "Die neuen Seidenstraßen", ID-A 14/19; Sieren: "Zukunft? China!", ID-A 50/18), noch dazu meist ohne Quellenangaben. Nur bedingt empfohlen.
