1946 wird durch die sowjetische Besatzungsmacht das Bergbauunternehmen Wismut gegründet. Stalin will die Atombombe und im sächsischen Erzgebirge steckt das für den Bau benötigte Uran. Volker Koepp porträtiert in beeindruckenden Bildern eine geschundene Landschaft und Menschen, die mit Würde, Stolz und Trauer zurückblicken. Sie erzählen Komisches, Unglaubliches und Tragisches. Die Gefahren, die von der Strahlung und der Staubentwicklung ausgingen, waren bekannt. Bis zum Ende der DDR hat eine halbe Million Menschen bei der Wismut 220.000 Tonnen angereichertes Uran produziert. Tausende gaben ihr Leben. Nach Einstellung der Produktion wird eine der größten Umweltkatastrophen der Erde offensichtlich.
