In vielen Kulturen existiert die Vorstellung der schöpferischen und wirkmächtigen Kraft des gesprochenen Wortes, wonach Realität durch das mündlich artikulierte Wort oder den Klang von Lautfolgen geformt werden kann. Geisteswissenschaftler, Schriftsteller und Musiker beschäftigen sich alle mit "Sprache" und Lauten und bedenken bei ihrer Arbeit mehr oder weniger bewusst die Wirkung der analysierten oder selbst komponierten Werke auf einen möglichen Rezipienten.
