Die totalitären Regime, mit denen sich die Ausstellung befaßt, vollzogen gezielt einen Bruch mit ihrer unmittelbaren Vergangenheit: Italien, UdSSR, Deutschland. Das wird schon auf der breit dokumentierten Weltausstellung 1937 in Paris deutlich. Mit 475 Exponaten wird das Verhältnis der offiziellen und der inoffiziellen Kunst zur Politik dokumentiert und auch tabellarisch visualisiert. Der aufwendige Katalog zeigt, wie Künstler - und hier vor allem Architekten - im Dienst der Propaganda instrumentalisiert, ja entwürdigt wurden und sich der öffentlichen Kontrolle nicht entziehen konnten. Die Forderung war, den Glanz der neuen Mächte darzustellen, Macht als öffentliches Schauspiel zu inszenieren und der Umerziehung und Propaganda zu dienen. Das gelang um so leichter, als die moderne Kunst lediglich eine Minderheit ansprach und deren Künstler ins Exil getrieben wurden. Mit 86 Kurzbiographien von Künstlern. (3) (LK/OL: Reindl-Scheffer)
