Die bekanntesten Vertreter dieser Dynastie sind zweifellos Heinrich der Löwe und Otto IV., sie waren Gegenstand der welfischen Geschichte von Bernd Schneidmüller (BA 12/00), der diese bis zur Aussöhnung zwischen Otto "dem Kind" und Friedrich II. auf staufischer Seite am Ende des Hochmittelalters abhandelt. Aschoff setzt mit seiner Welfengeschichte zur Zeit der Reformation ein und berichtet von der territorialen Teilung und Aufspaltung in 3 dynastische Linien bis zur Abdankung des Herzogs Ernst August im November 1918. Neben den britischen Throninhabern aus welfischem Geschlecht dürfte besonders der gelehrte Namensgeber der Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel ein Begriff sein.
