Die Hauptfiguren in Nadeem Aslams neuem Roman (zuletzt "Atlas für verschollene Liebende", BA 10/05) sind nicht in Afghanistan geboren, haben hier aber schicksalhafte Erlebnisse erfahren. Marcus, ein britischer Arzt und Besitzer einer Parfümfabrik in Afghanistan, hat die Russin Lara bei sich aufgenommen, die ihren vermissten Bruder sucht, der während der russischen Besatzung als Soldat Zameen, die inhaftierte Tochter Marcus' erst vergewaltigt, dann ihr aber das Leben gerettet hat. Anschließend verlaufen sich beider Spuren. Auch David, der einst als amerikanischer Geheimdienstmann afghanische Widerstandskämpfer instruierte und kurze Zeit mit Zameen zusammen war, kann nur wenige Aspekte über das Schicksal der beiden beitragen. Nun, viele Jahre nach diesen Ereignissen - inzwischen haben die Amerikaner das Land besetzt -, hat Marcus zudem seine Frau verloren, die von Taliban gesteinigt wurde. Die oft grausame und wenig zimperlich dargestellte Handlung verbindet der Autor mit atemberaubend intensiven und poetischen Bildern. Ein großartiges, bewegendes, das afghanische Dilemma erhellendes Buch.
