Der ursprüngliche Plan, einen Western zu inszenieren mit der Geschichte eines Trappers bei den Blackfoot-Indianern scheiterte aus Budgetgründen. Da ihm aber in Südafrika Unterstützung signalisiert wurde, ließ Wilde das Geschehen kurzerhand auf die örtlichen Verhältnisse umschreiben. Gefilmt wurde im Krüger-Nationalpark und im Betschuanaland (heute Botswana). Das Ergebnis ist der packende Überlebenskampf eines Mannes in der Wildnis.
