Gleichzeitig versucht sie sich dadurch von ihrem Verdacht des Ehebruchs durch ihren Mann abzulenken. In Kanada besucht sie, obwohl ihr Vater sie eindringlich davor warnt, die Absenderin der Karten, eine Künstlerin und ehemalige Freundin ihrer Mutter, die einsam an der sturmumtosten Küste lebt. Der äußerst fesselnde und spannende Debütroman, dessen Handlung zeitweise im heutigen England und einem kalifornischen Freizeitpark der 1970er-Jahre, vor allem aber an der Küste Kanadas der Gegenwart und der 1970er-Jahre stattfindet, und der überwiegend aus der Sicht Kals - psychologisch sehr einfühlsam - erzählt wird, hat Züge eines Psychothrillers. Daneben spielen im Roman Schwertwale und ihre Erforschung eine große Rolle. In jeder Hinsicht für alle sehr zu empfehlen.
