Der Band führt in das Römerreich und die Germanen am Beispiel der Varusschlacht ein. Ausführlich geht er auf Kaiser Augustus ein und dessen Schwierigkeiten, einen geeigneten Nachfolger zu finden. Vorgestellt werden auch das provinzialrömische Leben, u.a. am Beispiel Kölns, und von Varus, einem Karrierepolitiker. Knapper werden die Germanen abgehandelt, u.a. Arminius. Behandelt wird auch die Rezeption der Varusschlacht, u.a. am Beispiel des Hermanndenkmals. Der großformatige, reich illustrierte Band schafft es auf 44 Seiten, Kinder von etwa 10 bis 14 Jahren an das Thema heranzuführen. Neben verständlichen, knappen Texten gelingt das etwa durch Handlungsvorschläge, z.B. zum Kochen germanischer Gerichte (u.a. süße Gerstengrütze mit Dickmilch) und zur Herstellung einer Eichenlaubkrone. Leider fehlen Hinweise auf weitere geeignete Kinderbücher und Internetseiten. Besser als Kirsten: "Wer war Arminius?" und weniger komplex und geeigneter für Jüngere als Korn: "Das Rätsel der Varusschlacht". Empfohlen ab mittelgroßen Kinder- und Jugendbüchereien, besonders geeignet für Schulbibliotheken. Ab 10.
