Wilhelm Rudolph wurde als Erneuerer des realistischen Holzschnitts und als sensibler Porträtist gefeiert. Seine delikate und feinsinnige Malerei und seine in Holz geschnittenen lapidar wirkenden Motive machten ihn bereits in den 1920er-Jahren über Dresden hinaus bekannt.
