"Fait-divers" erzählt eine Amour-fou im Stil der Surrealisten: Zwei Männer konkurrieren um eine geheimnisvolle Frau und versetzen mit ihrer erotischen Obsession eine ganze Stadt förmlich in Bewegung. Paris, die Stadt der Liebe und der Libertinage, spielt mit und ist in den rotierenden Straßenansichten, Splitscreens und verrückten Kameraperspektiven ein Spiegel der in Aufruhr versetzten Gefühlswelt. Mit Antonin Artaud als einem der beiden Liebhaber spielt eine Galionsfigur des Surrealismus mit, sein durchdringender Blick antizipiert den der "Nadja" in André Bretons gleichnamigem Roman, veröffentlicht fünf Jahre später. Der Film entstand 1923, ein Jahr vor Fernand Légers "Le ballet mécanique" und René Clairs "Entr‘acte". "Mit seinem ersten Film scheint Autant-Lara auf Anhieb alle Möglichkeiten der Grammatik des Stummfilms auszuschöpfen; er verbindet Bildsprache und Rhythmus zu einer zwingenden metaphorischen Kalligraphie." (Freddy Buache, ehemaliger Direktor der Cinémathèque suisse, in "Travelling", Nr. 55, Lausanne 1979). Der Film wird in einer aktuellen Restaurierung des CNC mit einer Musik des deutschen Komponisten Malte Giesen angeboten, eingespielt vom Ensemble Musikfabrik Köln.
