Some time in the mid-19th century, somewhere in a remote place in Argentina, there lives a family of Japanese immigrants. There's Takeo (Nicolás Nakayama), a twenty-year-old, inexperienced young man who grows up listening to the tales told by his renowned samurai grandfather (Kazuomi Takagi). Then there's Takeo's father (Jorge Takashima), who strives hard to learn a foreign language and is keen on prospering and working the land. He has the firm belief that they all have to start a new life and forget all about Japan. When grandfather dies, Takeo mistakenly starts searching for Saigo Takamori, another samurai leader. As he traverses the country to find him, he meets Poncho Negro (Alejandro Awada), a veteran of the Paraguay war who's as alone and destitute as a man can be. Almost instantaneously, the two men strike a friendly relationship, and off they go across the country. Soon enough, they become good friends who stand for each other whenever necessary, come what may. In the meantime, the search for Takamori continues. That is, until some unexpected events change the state of things -- and not for the better. --Pablo Suárez, Buenos Aires Herald.com
