Diese Arbeit geht der Bedeutung der Gitarre gerade innerhalb jener Kulturepoche nach, die als in besonderer Weise prägend für die Gitarre angesehen werden kann, nämlich im Spanien des Mittelalters und des Siglo de Oro. Zu diesem Zweck wurden hispanische Texte unterschiedlicher Gattungen und Sprachen auf Hinweise auf die Gitarre und verwandte Saiteninstrumente hin untersucht und anschließend die gefundenen Textstellen auf ihre Bedeutung unter Anwendung semiotischer Methodologie analysiert. Dabei sind Bedeutungszusammenhänge zutage getreten, die das moderne Instrument mit griechisch-römischen und christlichen Anschauungen verbinden, wie sie die Forschung für die Antike und den Bereich des portugiesischen Sprachraums dargestellt hat; andererseits ergeben sich neue Interpretationen, die für ein Verständnis der Gitarre im Spanien der Neuzeit und insbesondere in Lateinamerika unerläßlich sind.
