Die von dem bekannten Industriearchäologen Dr. Hans-Peter Bärtschi realisierte und von der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Technikgeschichte und Industriekultur (SGTI) unterstützte Ausstellung zeichnet in sieben Zeitabschnitten sieben industrielle Entwicklungen in der Schweiz nach: 1798 - 1848 Die industrielle Revolution - Textilindustrie und Wasserkraft, 1849 - 1873 Alpentransversalen und Eisenbahnschlachten, 1874 - 1898 Verstädterung und Tourismusindustrie, 1899 - 1923 Schwerindustrienation Schweiz, 1924 - 1948 Energie und Alltägliches: Vom Luxus zum Massenkonsum, 1949 - 1973 Betonreiche - rohstoffarme Schweiz?, 1974 - 1998 Desindustrialisierung - mit der Vergangenheit die Zukunft gestalten. Das Buch ist zugleich der um mehrere Textbeiträge erweiterte Katalog der Ausstellung. Hans-Peter Bärtschi beschreibt darin die Problematik und den Stand der technikgeschichtlichen Forschung und der Industriedenkmalpflege in der Schweiz. Eine Übersicht über Industrielehrpfade sowie über gesamtschweizerische Organisationen, Zeitschriften und Literatur, die sich mit industriegeschichtlichen Themen befassen, beschliessen den Rundgang durch 150 Jahre Industriekultur der Schweiz
