Die Produkte der Konsumwelt, ihre Präsentationsästhetik und ihre Verführungsmechanismen haben sich erst seit der Pop-Art die Kunstschaffenden fasziniert. Zolas "Paradies der Damen" beschäftigt sich mit den zur Jahrhundertwende neu entstandenen "Kathedralen des Konsums", den Warenhäusern. Die Warenwelt als eine Idealwelt, eine nie versiegende Quelle käuflicher Schätze, der Warenbesitz als Identitätsbild und das Shoppen als Lebenseinheit - all das fasziniert Künstler bis heute. Die Schirn-Kunsthalle in Frankfurt sammelte Arbeiten von 200 Künstlern zum Thema und ließ mit einer spektakulären Inszenierung, die Grenzen zwischen Supermarkt- und Ausstellungsdesign fließen. Das begleitende Katalogbuch ist eine eher konventionelle, aber umso solidere Publikation, die durch die Fülle überzeugender Exponate vor allem aber durch fundierte Katalogbeiträge besticht, mit denen weitgehend thematisches Neuland betreten wird.
