Nach mehr als 40 Jahren im Ausland kehrt Iván, der Ungarn 1956 sofort nach seiner Entlassung als politischer Häftling und noch während der Revolution verlassen hat, unerwartet in seine Heimatstadt zurück. Zu Beginn des Films genießt er, zusammen mit seiner britischen Frau, ein wohlhabendes Pensionärsleben in Lugano, bis ihn eines Tages ein merkwürdiger Anruf erreicht. Er erfährt, dass seine alte Liebe Mari schwer krank ist. Trotz aller Bedenken und Vorbehalte eilt er nach Budapest, um sie wieder zu sehen. Eine Reise, die ihn mit der dunklen Vergangenheit konfrontieren wird. Auf dem Krankenbett beichtet ihm Mari einen Verrat und sie erzählt ihm von anderen schmerzhaften Geheimnissen und Kompromissen, die sie nicht länger mit sich herumtragen will. Der größte Schock für Iván ist die Mitteilung, dass er mit ihr eine mittlerweile erwachsene Tochter hat, die ihren Vater tot glaubt. Der Besuch verändert Iváns Leben sowie das der Menschen, die ihn umgeben, radikal. Károly Makk zeigt uns die Geschichte zweier Menschen, die einander liebten, die jedoch durch Geschichte und Schicksal auseinander gerissen wurden. Iván muss sich entscheiden, ob er den Verrat verzeihen kann und mit wem er sein restliches Leben verbringen möchte. Wer ist letztendlich der Verräter, wer Gewinner und Verlierer in dieser Geschichte?
