Seit Erscheinen des ersten Faksimiles Mitte des vorigen Jahrhunderts steht der Klosterplan von St. Gallen, diese einzigartige Pergamentzeichnung aus dem frühen Mittelalter, verstärkt im Fokus der Forschung. Viele Autoren haben versucht, seinen Geheimnissen auf die Spur zu kommen. Unterschiedlichste Thesen und Hilfskonstruktionen wurden dafür bemüht. Antike Autoren sollen ihn beeinflußt haben, die Aachener Beschlüsse zur Reform des karolingischen Mönchtums seien in ihm wiederzufinden, römische und andere Maßstäbe, Gitternetze und Blindrillen beispielsweise, hätten seine Anfertigung bestimmt, und anderes mehr. Allein der angebliche ‚Planwiderspruch‘, Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts aufgedeckt, hat seither zu höchst phantasiereichen Interpretationsansätzen geführt. Bei den in diesem Band vereinten Aufsätzen handelt es sich um technische Analysen. Sie wurden durchgeführt mit moderner Computer-Software, sind neuen Forschungsansätzen am materiellen Plan verpflichtet, und sie präsentieren an digitalen Abbildungen des Plans gewonnene neue Befunde. Die Ergebnisse, klar und nachprüfbar dokumentiert, dürften den Klosterplan in neuem Licht erscheinen lassen. Auch der abschließende Beitrag, eine detaillierte Auswertung literarischer Quellen aus dem historischen Umfeld des Plans, zeigt Spuren und Zusammenhänge auf, die zum Verständnis der komplexen Fragen nach Ursprung, Herstellern und Empfängern beitragen und das Dokument damit ebenfalls unter relevanten Aspekten neu beleuchten.
