Das Buch thematisiert den Einfluss von Johann Christoph Gottsched auf den sich gegen Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts etablierenden Klassizismus in Deutschland. Als Verfasser und Herausgeber moralischer wie literaturkritischer Schriften schuf dieser erst die ästhetischen Grundlagen. George Bajeski stellt darüber hinaus Gottscheds Gedanken zur Sprache und Rhetorik, zur Übersetzung und zu einer deutschen Akademie in den Kontext seines ästhetischen Werte- und Normensystems. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf Gottscheds Einfluss auf Johann Joachim Winckelmann. Dessen Klassizismus, auf den die Kunstauffassungen der Weimarer Klassik zurückgehen, hätte sich ohne die vielfältigen kritisch-ästhetischen Vorarbeiten Gottscheds kaum in der bekannten Form entwickelt, somit ist Gottsched als Wegbereiter Winckelmanns anzusehen.
