The Akathist Hymn for Saint Barbara honours the Great Martyr Barbara of Nicodemia († 306), whose relics are being kept in Kiev since the early 12th century. She is regarded as the patron saint against abrupt death and her commemoration day is celebrated at the 4th of December. The Akathist for Saint Barbara was printed for the first time at the printing press of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra in 1687/98. According to the historian and Bishop Evgenij Bolchovitinov the Hymn was written by metropolitan Bishop of Kiev Ioasaf Krokovskij († 1718), who is also known for his work on the Kievan Cave Patericon (1702). Another edition of the Hymn is known from the printing press in Mogilev (1698). The Akathist Hymn for Saint Barbara was printed about 20 times during the 18th century in Kiev and was very popular with Eastern Orthodox believers. This edition of the Hymn (1788) is the reprint from the Kievan edition, which was produced in the printing press of the Holy Dormition Lavra in Pochayiv, probably for the needs of the Old Believers from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
