Los Estados de América Latina y el Caribe han ratificado la Convención para la Eliminación de todas las formas de Discriminación contra la Mujer (CEDAW por sus siglas en inglés), no obstante la igualdad sustantiva entre hombres y mujeres en América Latina y el Caribe sigue siendo un gran desafío. En este trabajo se examinan las Observaciones Finales y Recomendaciones del Comité CEDAW a los países de la región. En la primera sección de este trabajo se presenta una introducción metodológica y conceptual sobre la autonomía, el empoderamiento y los derechos de las mujeres contemplados en la CEDAW. En el segundo capítulo se examinan los avances y desafíos en la garantía de los derechos de las mujeres a través del análisis de las Observaciones y Recomendaciones generales del Comité CEDAW a los países de América Latina y el Caribe. Finalmente, se presentan algunas conclusiones basadas en la reflexión de los capítulos anteriores.
