Im Kalten Krieg wandelte sich der Westen Berlins von der Hauptstadt der NS-Diktatur zum Symbol für Freiheit und Demokratie. Scott H. Krause zeigt, dass dies besonders auf eine enge Kooperation zwischen der antikommunistischen US-Außenpolitik und einem Netzwerk von Remigranten der eigentlich marxistischen SPD um Willy Brandt zurückging. Mittels PR und amerikanischer Zuwendungen inszenierten sie die Stadt gemeinsam als "Vorposten der Freiheit" gegenüber der SED, aber auch innerparteilichen Rivalen. Brandts Einzug ins Schöneberger Rathaus 1957 markierte einen Meilenstein für die Westbindung der SPD. Der Mauerbau der DDR erschütterte diese Meistererzählung, spornte Brandt aber zur Suche nach neuen Lösungsansätzen an. Indem einst gescholtene Emigranten prowestliche Mehrheiten links der Mitte schufen, trugen sie entscheidend zum Gründungskonsens der Bundesrepublik bei.
