« Si on voulait écrire une histoire complète de cet horrible tribunal et de ses victimes, elle remplirait à elle seule un épais volume », fit remarquer l'historien strasbourgeois Jean Friesé en 1801. Or, si pendant deux siècles la « justice » révolutionnaire dans les départements inspira bien des monographies, le tribunal révolutionnaire de Strasbourg semble avoir été oublié. Pourtant, la littérature historique évoquait ses « jugements à la tournée » et sa « guillotine ambulante » chaque fois qu'il était question de la Terreur en Alsace, mais avec bien des divergences d'un auteur à l'autre. Son « histoire complète » restait toujours à écrire. C'est désormais chose faite, car le tribunal révolutionnaire de Strasbourg a laissé suffisamment de traces pour reconstituer le déroulement de son activité, entreprendre son étude sur la foi d'une documentation renouvelée et le débarrasser des fantaisies imaginées par une littérature plus souvent légendaire que vraiment historique.
