Nach "Die Flammen des Mars" (ID-A 17/15) setzt Greg Bear die Abenteuer seines Protagonisten Sergeant Michael Venn fort, der den Kampf um den Roten Planeten gegen die feindlichen Antags überlebt hat und zunächst in Zwangsquarantäne gehalten wird. Nach seiner Flucht kehrt er mit den Resten seiner Crew zum Mars zurück, um mehr über den geheimnisvollen Eismondbrocken, Drifter genannt, zu erfahren. Venns galaktische Reise führt ihn weiter zu dem von den 2 verfeindeten Alien-Völkern umkämpften Saturnmond Titan, um dort das Rätsel um den Ursprung des Lebens lösen zu können. Dabei kommen langsam Zweifel an der Integrität der menschenfreundlichen Gurus auf. Bear gelingt es diesmal nicht, die Spannung durchgängig zu halten. Auch lässt der Mittelroman im Vergleich zum 1. Teil ein wenig die Dynamik beim Fortgang der Handlung vermissen. Zur Komplettierung und Fortsetzung der War-Dogs-Trilogie jedoch überall einsetzbar. Ulrich Kühne
