UND BIBLIOGRAPHISCHE BEMERKUNGEN Beginnend mit der etwas vagen Vorstellung von Symmetrie als Harmonie der Proportionen entwickeln diese vier Vorträge stufenweise zuerst den Begriff der geometrischen Symmetrie in ihren verschiedenen Formen als bilaterale, translative, rotative, ornamentale und kristallographische Symmetrie und steigen schließlich zu der allgemeinen, all diesen speziellen Formen zugrunde liegenden Idee auf, nämlich der Idee der Invarianz eines Gebildes gegenüber einer Gruppe automorpher Transformationen. Ich habe dabei zwei Dinge im Auge: einerseits die große Mannigfaltigkeit der Anwendungen des Symmetrieprinzips in der Kunst, in der anorganischen und der organischen Natur aufzuzeigen, andererseits Schritt für Schritt die philosophisch-mathematische Bedeutung des Symmetriebegriffs zu klären. Dieses letztere Ziel erfordert die Gegenüberstellung der Prinzipien von Symmetrie und Relativität, während dem ersteren zahlreiche den Text erläuternde Illustrationen zu dienen bestimmt sind. Als Leser dieses Buchs hatte ich einen weiteren Kreis als den gelehrter Spezialisten im Sinn. Das Buch meidet die Mathematik nicht (damit wurde es seinen Zweck verfehlen), aber die ausführliche Behandlung, insbesondere die vollständige mathematische Behandlung der meisten darin betrachteten Probleme liegt außerhalb seines Zielbereichs. Den Vorträgen, welche in leicht modifizierter Form die vom Verfasser an der Universitat Princeton im Februar 1951 gehaltenen Louis Clark Vanuxem Lectures wiedergeben, sind zwei Anhänge mit mathematischen Beweisen angefügt worden.
