Oscar Begas, Spross der bedeutenden Berliner Künstlerdynastie, übernahm nach dem Tod seines Vaters und Lehrers, des königlich-preußischen Hofmalers Carl Joseph Begas d. Ä., dessen florierendes Atelier. Ursprünglich auf dem Feld der Historienmalerei ausgebildet, stieg er bald zu einem der gefragtesten Bildnismaler der Hauptstadt auf; er porträtierte die Finanzelite und war mehrfach auch für die Hohenzollern tätig. In Begas’ Bildnissen von Springer, Bleichröder, Menzel, Ullstein und anderen verschmilzt die vom Vater ererbte berlinisch-biedermeierliche Bildkultur zunehmend mit dem heraufdämmernden Pathos und dem Repräsentationswillen der Gründerzeit. Im Vorfeld der Reichsgründung von 1871 wirkte Begas an zahlreichen Ausstattungsprojekten für die prächtigen Privatvillen und öffentlichen Bauten der boomenden Metropole mit. Auch als Professor an der Königlichen Akademie der Künste sowie als aktiver Protagonist des gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Lebens hat Begas die Berliner Kunst seiner Epoche mitgeprägt.
