Von Januar 2004 bis zu seiner Verhaftung im April 2009 organisierte der österreichische Sportmanager Stefan Matschiner für zahlreiche internationale Athleten Dopingmittel zur Leistungssteigerung. Sein "Repertoire" umfasste Testosteron, Designer-Steroide, Wachstumshormone, Insulin, Adrenalin, EPO-Produkte jeder Art und alle Formen des Blutdopings. Letzteres beherrschte er durch die Anschaffung und Nutzung hochkomplexer Blutzentrifugen bis zur Perfektion. Die "Spinne im Netz" wie Matschiner von deutschen Medien gerne bezeichnet wird, zählte damit zu den bedeutendsten Hintermännern der Dopingszene im Leistungssport. Offen und ehrlich beschreibt Matschiner in seiner Autobiografie, wie er nach und nach in die Dopingkriminalität hineingeriet, und zeichnet ein schonungsloses Bild der Parallelgesellschaft Leistungssport, in welcher der Betrug am anderen und der Selbstbetrug die Regel und die Lüge ständiger Begleiter ist. Nie zuvor hat ein Buch derart tiefe Einblicke in die erschütternde Realität des Dopings im Spitzensport gewährt.
