"Une découverte ! Le précieux contenu d'un portefeuille acquis en 1854 par le duc d'Aumale, conservé au musée Condé de Chantilly. Vingt-trois dessins exceptionnels de Jacques Bellange (vers 1575 1616) et une série de trente-quatre estampes au trait de Jean Berain (1640-1711), avec rehauts d'aquarelle, d'or et d'argent, évoquent les fastes des cours de Lorraine et de France au XVIIe siècle. La richesse, la variété, la fantaisie et l'extrême raffinement de cet ensemble illustrent une véritable spécialité française dans le domaine des spectacles : celle du costume de ballet, de carrousel et d'opéra. Complétées par des dessins de la collection Edmond de Rothschild du musée du Louvre et d'autres institutions, ces oeuvres graphiques permettent de comprendre comment cet art exercé avec tant de talent à Nancy par Bellange a pu conduire son compatriote Berain à exceller plus tard, sous le règne de Louis XIV, dans les habits des divertissements des résidences royales."--Page 4 of cover
