Content: Ibrāhīm Ibn Sinān was one of the most famous scientists of the tenth century. His specialities were geometry, logic and philosophy of mathematics. In this volume, three new hypotheses are presented. The first one concerns the existence and the development of philosophy of mathematics in Arabic, independently of traditional metaphysics and philosophy. It is mainly concerned with the logic of discovery and the logic of proof. The second hypothesis concerns the development of a new chapter in mathematics devoted to geometrical transformations. The close connection between astronomy and mathematics, used to develop this last chapter, is discussed in the third hypothesis. The book presents a critical edition done for the first time and based on all available manuscripts, French translations, and long historical and mathematical commentaries

Content: The International Monetary Fund under Constraint exposes a legal dilemma facing the IMF as it tackles international crisis management. Using the Asian crisis - and more particularly economic and political events in Indonesia - as an example, this volume examines whether the Fund's activities in Asia were legally justified. The results of this analysis lead to the following question: What future role can the IMF play in the international financial architecture? The principles of international law and the legal foundations of the Fund are used to analyse the reform suggestions of economic experts and to find a suitable concept for future IMF involvement in financial crises and crises prevention. Content: Thabit ibn Qurra (826-901) war einer der originellsten Köpfe aller Zeiten. Als Mann von umfassender Bildung, der Arabisch, Griechisch und Syrisch sprach und seit dem Mittelalter selbst ins Lateinische übersetzt wurde, war er ein vollendeter Repräsentant des Goldenen Zeitalters der Abassiden. Ihm verdanken sich neue Kapitel in der Geschichte der Mathematik, der erste Fortschritt in der Astronomie über Ptolemaios hinaus und die erste radikale Kritik an der aristotelischen Ontologie im Namen des mathematischen Idealismus. Content: Thabit ibn Qurra (826-901) was one of history's most original thinkers and displayed expertise in the most difficult disciplines of this time: geometry, number theory, and astronomy as well as ontology, physics, and metaphysics. Approximately a dozen of this shorter mathematical and philosophical writings are collected in this volume. Critically edited with accompanying commentary, these writings show how Thabit Ibn Qurra developed and reconceived the intellectual inheritance of ancient Greece in all areas of knowledge.

Content: Einem einzigartigen und schwierigen Problem gewidmet, ist die Abhandlung Über den Verhältnisschnitt von Apollonius aus Perge ein bemerkenswert komplexes Beispiel für die Erforschung der notwendigen Voraussetzungen für die Existenz einer Lösung. Apollonius ergründet in diesem Traktat die Extremwerte eines Verhältnisses und die Variationen dieses Verhältnisses durch verschiedene Intervalle - eine Methode, die in der griechischen Welt der Antike ihresgleichen sucht. Die Kenntnis des Textes beruhte bisher nur auf einer ungenauen lateinischen Übersetzung durch Edward Halley (Oxford 1706). Der vorliegende Band bietet die editio princeps des nur noch in einer anonymen arabischen Fassung überlieferten Verhältnisschnittes. Erschlossen wird der Text durch eine französische Übersetzung und einen Kommentar, der die Mechanismen des schwierigen Beweises durch Apollonius aufzeigt und dabei besonders auf deren konzeptionelle Innovationen hinweist. Diese Edition gehört in jede Bibliothek der Klassischen Philologie, der Wissenschaftsphilosophie und der Mathematikgeschichte.

Content: The treatise De Rationis Sectione by Apollonius of Perge, which deals with a unique and difficult problem, is a remarkable, complex example of the study of the necessary pre-conditions for the existence of a solution. This volume presents the editio princeps of the text, which has only survived in an Arabic version. It is made accessible in the form of a French translation and a commentary that reveals the mechanisms of Apollonius' difficult proof, and draws particular attention to its conceptual innovations.
