Die Bilder des israelischen Malers und Zeichners Avner Ben-Gal (*1966) zeigen karge Landschaften mit brennenden Häusern und isolierten Figuren. Sie implizieren Erzählungen, die – fernab der propagandistischen Bildwelten der Massenmedien, welche uns tagtäglich aus dem Nahen Osten erreichen – eine eigene Realität der jüngsten Geschichte entwerfen und gleichzeitig einen poetisch fantastischen Kosmos aufspannen. Der düstere Grundton der oft mythologisch oder allegorisch anmutenden Bilder korrespondiert dabei mit einer subtilen Reflexion der malerischen Mittel: So entziehen sich die traumhaften Szenerien buchstäblich der Betrachtung, indem monochrome Farbschleier die Darstellung überlagern oder gar zum Verschwinden bringen. Nachdem Ben-Gals Werk in zahlreichen internationalen Gruppenausstellungen vertreten war, widmet sich diese Begleitpublikation zu seiner ersten Einzelausstellung Arbeiten der letzten Jahre sowie neuesten Bildern.
