La poésie arabe s'est toujours voulue le conservatoire d'une culture et d'une histoire, le monument élevé à la gloire d'une communauté, le champ d'exercice d'une conscience collective. Poétique arabe entreprend de présenter une théorie de cette écriture. L'ouvrage analyse aussi bien les phases de son élaboration que les lieux où elle se décide et s'organise : mémoire poétique, forme-poème, espace-vers, opérateurs phono-sémantiques, etc. Cette réflexion permet, dans un premier temps, de remettre en place les concepts de classicisme, néo-classicisme et modernisme, trop imprudemment employés dans le domaine arabe. Elle conduit surtout à cerner les rapports établis entre le langage et la philosophie générale de l'existence qui s'y fait jour. Cette deuxième édition est précédée d'une étude du discours critique qui a fermement orienté la poésie arabe médiévale en lui assignant une fonction dans l'édifice culturel.
