Ein Koch, kniend in einer Landschaft, mit den Gesichtszügen Bismarcks wirft Eierstich in einen Suppenteller, ein Messer daneben. im Hintergrund ein Hühnerhaufen, der Hahn trägt die Züge Napoleon des III. Die Namen: Benedetti, Sarlouis, Belgien, "Times", Rheingrenzen weisen auf das historische Geschehen um 1870 hin. Hintergrund: Nach dem Krieg zwischen Deutschland und Österreich erhielt der franzöische Diplomat Benedetti den Auftrag, dem preußischen Ministerpräsidenten Bismarck die französischen Forderungen nach einer "Vergütung" für die französische Neutralität während des Krieges vorzubringen: das preußische Einverständnis mit der französischen Annexion Belgiens und Luxemburgs. Er entwarf 1866 einen Vertrag, in dem Preußen seine Duldung der französischen Machtausdehnung zusagte. Der Vertrag wurde nie geschlossen, aber der Entwurf, in Benedettis Handschrift, verblieb in Bismarcks Besitz und wurde wenige Tage nach dem Ausbruch des deutsch-französischen Kriegs zum Schaden der französischen Diplomatie in der Londoner Zeitung "The Times" veröffentlicht.
