Content: This book summarizes approaches that integrate the environmental, economic, and physical domains with the values, and needs of the population are necessary to develop sustainable strategies that will enhance the resilience of small islands, within the context of inter-island differences in geology, ecology, societal attitudes, governance, and human and economic resources. The impacts of coastal damage and flooding are predicted to worsen during this century due to rising sea levels and increases in the frequency and intensity of storms. The usual approach to coastal protection in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean is to view both the hazards and the solutions from the "Ocean Side" perspective and to react with "hard" engineering solutions. These structural engineering approaches prevent damage and disruptions to services associated with predictable events but leave communities vulnerable to future events that do not follow historical trends. Furthermore, engineered structures do not adequately address the systemic nature of climate change nor account for compounding threats (e.g., coincidence of hurricane season and global pandemics). To move from this traditional strategy for managing risks from coastal hazards, we need to consider a portfolio of solutions that enhance island protection and community resilience. Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are gaining attention as practical and cost-effective approaches for mitigating climate-based stressors. However, deployment of NBS strategies requires spatial coordination within the context of "ridge to reef" or integrated water resource management (IWRM) approaches that include the creation of conditions for social acceptance, equity, effective governance, and financial incentives.

Content: " In the rubble of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans and ultrarich Puertopians are locked in a pitched struggle over how to remake the island. In this vital and startling investigation, New York Times bestselling author and activist Naomi Klein uncovers how the forces of shock politics and disaster capitalism seek to undermine the nation's radical, resilient vision for a just recovery. "
Content: Rezension(1): " Naomi Klein is an award-winning journalist, syndicated columnist, documentary filmmaker, and author of the international bestsellers No Logo , The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism , This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate , and No Is Not Enough . She is senior correspondent for The Intercept and contributor to the Nation magazine. She is also a Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow at the Nation Institute and her writing appears widely in such publications as the New York Times , Le Monde , and the Guardian . Klein is a member of the board of directors for climate-action group 350.org and one of the organizers behind Canada's Leap Manifesto (theleap.org), a blueprint for a rapid and justice-based transition off fossil fuels. In November 2016 she was awarded Australia's prestigious Sydney Peace Prize. Her books have been translated into more than thirty languages. " Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: June 18, 2018 Journalist Klein ( No Is Not Enough ) lays out the challenges facing Puerto Ricans who seek to transform their island into a democratic polity that serves the people’s interests rather than colonial kleptocracy in what is essentially an extended if enlightening pamphlet. The brief work reports on the actions taken after Hurricane Maria by Professors Self-Assembled in Solidarity Resistance and other organizations to develop strategies for combating neoliberal structural adjustments such as privatization of public services and deregulation of commerce, as well as the wealthy “Puertopians” investing in an attempt to use the island for cryptocurrency mining (surprising given the lack of adequate power for those who live there). Klein recapitulates elements of her work regarding the “shock doctrine,” noting privatizations of public assets in the wake of the hurricane, which worsened previously imposed austerity measures. She breaks Puerto Rico’s circumstances down into four categories—desperation, distraction, despair, and disappearance—and traces the problems to corruption, incompetence, and years of neglect, combined with a “starve-then-sell strategy” that has furthered privatization schemes elsewhere. But Klein finds sources of hope in centers of community-run resistance, such as the JunteGente network (to which she is donating royalties from the book), a network of organizers against austerity and inequality. Klein’s account is a welcome update on the situation in Puerto Rico—one that portends similar battles worldwide as climate change accelerates." Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://www.audiofilemagazine.com target=_blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/audiofile_logo.jpg alt=AudioFile Magazine border=0 /〉〈/a〉:This short audiobook packs as potent a punch as the hurricanes that devastated the island of Puerto Rico in 2017. Its intent is to clear a path forward for the people and institutions that are still subject to American rule but who wish to remake Puerto Rico into a sustainable, unique place to live. The author also warns about those who want to profit from its pain. Narrator Erin Bennett approaches this work in a clear, authoritative voice that reflects the no-nonsense tone of Klein's words. Bennett takes control immediately, pausing effectively and pacing herself so that we can both understand and analyze the book's message. Even more memorable, she maintains a measured approach even when the message becomes fiery. R.I.G. AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine"

Content: " Satisfy your craving for extraordinary authors and exceptional fiction: Meet the women writers who defied convention to craft some of literature's strangest tales, from Frankenstein to The Haunting of Hill House and beyond .Frankenstein was just the beginning: horror stories and other weird fiction wouldn't exist without the women who created it. From Gothic ghost stories to psychological horror to science fiction, women have been primary architects of speculative literature of all sorts. And their own life stories are as intriguing as their fiction. Everyone knows about Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein, who was rumored to keep her late husband's heart in her desk drawer. But have you heard of Margaret Mad Madge Cavendish, who wrote a science-fiction epic 150 years earlier (and liked to wear topless gowns to the theater)? If you know the astounding work of Shirley Jackson, whose novel The Haunting of Hill House was reinvented as a Netflix series, then try the psychological hauntings of Violet Paget, who was openly involved in long-term romantic relationships with women in the Victorian era. You'll meet celebrated icons (Ann Radcliffe, V. C. Andrews), forgotten wordsmiths (Eli Coltor, Ruby Jean Jensen), and today's vanguard (Helen Oyeyemi). Curated reading lists point you to their most spine-chilling tales. Part biography, part reader's guide, the engaging write-ups and detailed reading lists will introduce you to more than a hundred authors and over two hundred of their mysterious and spooky novels, novellas, and stories. Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: May 27, 2019 Macomber ( Cottage by the Sea ) hits all the standard beats in this formulaic standalone double romance. University of Washington college buddies Jenna Boltz and Maureen Zelinski are now empty nesters and long since divorced. They are encouraged by their children, and by each other, to pursue new relationships. Jenna is charmed by Dr. Rowan Lancaster, the surgeon taking care of her mother after a fall—but, like her ex, he works at the Seattle hospital where she is a nurse, and the similarity makes her uncomfortable. Librarian Maureen gives in to the attention of construction worker Logan, who comes to her library from his worksite for book recommendations, but his working-class buddies and inability to enjoy ballet as well as football throw her off. Jenna and Maureen’s emotional skills feel on par with a teenager’s, and readers will find that the romances seem more like compromises than successes. Macomber’s indubitable technical skill can’t make up for the way her stock characters plod through their stock situations. Agent: Theresa Park, Park &,Fine Literary. "
