Cette étude met en évidence l'importance du thème de l'incarcération dans la formation du roman en France au seuil de l'époque moderne (XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles). La présence remarquable des mêmes motifs saillants (menace d'emprisonnement, description des geôles, aspiration à la délivrance) est le reflet et le symptôme des inquiétudes d'un genre en plein essor, obsédé par les menaces de censures, mais dynamisé par des tours d'expression inédits et par la passion de l'affranchissement des contraintes. Insaisissables sous mille facettes variées, les personnages picaresques d'Alemán, Quevedo (adaptés en français), Sorel, Cyrano, Courtilz de Sandras, Lesage, Prévost, Voltaire ou Diderot constituent des caricatures burlesques de l'incarcération, oscillant entre fixité (l'héritage socratique ou paulinien de l'emprisonnement comme épreuve de vérité) et mobilité.
