Jan Meefout (1915-1993) en het vrouwelijk schoon zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. De Amsterdamse beeldhouwer heeft de vrouw in al haar gedaanten (moeder, verleidster, godin) afgebeeld. Slechts bij uitzondering heeft Meefout dit thema verlaten. Gevormd als meubelmaker, kwam Meefout in de leer bij Jaap Kaas en Frits van Hall en tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog bij professor Jan Bronner op de Rijksakademie. Hij onderscheidde zich door zijn liefde voor het ambacht en zijn materiaal: weerbarstige stukken steen en hout hadden zijn voorkeur. Hij liet zich door dit materiaal leiden naar een bepaalde vorm. Jan Meefout is het vierde deel in de reeks Monografieën van het Sculptuur Instituut. Naast essays, een niet eerder gepubliceerd interview met de beeldhouwer en een bijdrage van diens zoon, bevat deze publicatie een volledig geïllustreerde oeuvrecatalogus.
