2 Elemente in ihr denkbar. Die Erscheinungen offenbaren sich dadurch unterschiedslos als Bewegungserscheinungen, die Gesetze als Bewegungsgesetze, die Kräfte als Bewegungskräfte. Wenn nun damit auch das Ziel der Forschung bestimmt ist, so ist die Physik als Ganzes doch noch weit davon entfernt. Wo die Zurückführung auf Bewegungsvorgänge noch nicht gelungen ist, nehmen wir aber nicht an, daß sie unmöglich ist, sondern nur, daß sie bei dem gegenwärtigen Stande der Wissenschaft noch nicht möglich ist. Es ist ja auch erst im letzten Jahrhundert geglückt, den "Wärmestoff" zu beseitigen und zu beweisen, daß Wärme eine Art Bewegung ist. - Die einzelnen Gebiete der Physik sind desto vollkommener erschlossen, je mehr von den zu ihnen gehörenden Erscheinungen aus Bewegungsgesetzen begriffen werden konnten, wenn auch der mechanische Hergang nicht immer bis in die letzten Einzelheiten verfolgt werden kann. Wir wissen z. B. , daß die Gruppierung derselben Massenteilchen im Eise anders ist als im Wasser. Wir wissen sogar, daß sie im Eise regelmäßiger ist. Wir wissen aber nicht, wie die Umgruppierung vor sich geht, die den Unterschied zwischen Wasser und Eis kennzeichnet, obwohl wir die Bedingungen für die Umwandlung von Wasser in Eis oder von Eis in Wasser gut kennen. Dem Ziel am nächsten sind diejenigen Gebiete der Physik, in denen man die Vorgänge als Bewegungen sehen und messen kann - allen voran die Astronomie; die vollkommene Kenntnis eines Vorganges bezeichnet man geradezu als "astronomische"
