Der Maler Israel Bernbaum hat in Bildern seine Erinnerungen an die Zeit im Warschauer Ghetto festgehalten und fünf großformatige, farbige Gemälde für die Kinder von heute gemalt und erläutert. „Die Sprache der Bilder wird überall verstanden. Eine gefestigte Zukunft können wir nur dann schaffen, wenn wir die Vergangenheit kennen.“ Die Serie seiner Gemälde nennt der Maler „Warschauer Ghetto 1943“. In dem Ghetto der polnischen Hauptstadt wurden mehr als eine halbe Million Juden getötet. Zu jedem Bild sagt der Maler, was es für ihn bedeutet und erklärt den historischen Bezug. Er ergänzt Malerei und Text durch Photos. „Straßen des Warschauer Ghettos 1943“, „Beiderseits der Warschauer Ghettomauern“, „Die jüdische Mutter im Ghetto“, „Jüdische Kinder in Ghettos und Vernichtungslagern“, „Der Aufstand im Warschauer Ghetto“ sind die Kapitel des Buches benannt. Das letzte Bild geht auf die Frage ein, die auch Kinder stellen. Was können wir tun, damit sich so etwas wie der Holocaust nicht wiederholt? „Wir müssen alle Rassentheorien über die Ungleichheit der Menschen als falsch, inhuman und unmoralisch ablehnen. Wir dürfen gegen keinen Menschen nur wegen seiner Hautfarbe, seiner Religion oder seiner Herkunft ein Vorurteil hegen. Wir müssen lernen, tolerant zu sein und Unterschiede zwischen Menschen hinzunehmen. Statt einander zu hassen, wollen wir einander zuhören und einer vom anderen lernen“. Das Nachwort enthält Auszüge aus der Rede des Bundespräsidenten Richard von Weizsäcker vom 8. Mai 1985. Israel Bernbaum, einer der wenigen Überlebenden einer großen jüdischen Familie, lebt heute in den USA, wo 1979 bis 1982 die Gemälde entstanden. Die Bilder sind das Ergebnis von vielen Diskussionen mit Schulkindern. Das eindringliche Buch ermöglicht Gespräche mit Kindern über den Holocaust, aber eignet sich auch für den Kunst-, Religions- oder Geschichtsunterricht. „Israel Bernbaum versucht die Geschichte von damals den Kindern von heute nahe zubringen. Die Zeichnungen sind kindgerecht – sie drücken vielleicht eindringlicher als es jeder Text vermag das aus, was Kinder angesichts dieses Leidens selbst empfinden“, schreibt Annemarie Renger, ehemalige Vizepräsidentin des Deutschen Bundestages im Vorwort.
