Gus Dury, bis zu seinem Rauswurf wegen Trunkenheit ein angesehener Journalist, nun auch noch von seiner Frau Deborah vor die Tür gesetzt, lebt in einem Zimmer über der Kneipe von Col und macht für ihn den Aufpasser. Als Cols Sohn Billy ermordet wird und die Polizei weniger als lustlos ermittelt, schließlich auf Selbstmord befindet, bittet Col Dury, den wahren Mörder zu finden. Billy war ein kleines Licht in Edinburghs Unterwelt, hatte aber eine schicke Freundin und offenbar Ambitionen, weiter nach oben zu kommen. Als Dury anfängt, in dem Fall herumzustochern, verliert er nicht nur seine Zähne, sondern auch die Freiheit und einen guten Freund. Doch Dury hat sich festgebissen und lässt nicht locker ... - "Tony Black schafft es, dass der durch und durch aufrichtige Gus mit seinen Abgründen zum Sympathieträger wird.
